Introductions

Welcome to Digital Literacy

My name is Keith Hughes and I will be your instructor. I have been teaching at the high school level, at McKinley High School for for eight years and at the college level for four years. In addition I have also been the lead instructor for City Voices, City Vision for six years. Adopting the new literacies model I seek to expand the adoption and use of multimodality in our classrooms to facilitate learning. I believe with my heart and soul that young people crave learning. I also believe that as an educator my job is to facilitate their journey to self sufficiency and academic success. There is a saying that I've adopted in my classroom, "Where attention goes, energy flows". Whether it is a dynamic lecture, a student produced video project or writing a research paper, when a student can be convinced to devote their attention to a task the possibilities become endless.

I Grew Up
My roots are sown in the lower N.Y. Hudson Valley in a small town named Putnam Valley.

My Hobbies
Videography has been a creative outlet for me for the last 6 or 7 years. I also have a bit of political junky in me as well.

Favorite Books
Catcher in the Rye (Salinger), Breakfast of Champions (and anything by Kurt Vonnegut) and Howard Zinn's, The People's History of the United States.

Why I Do What I Do
Teaching is in my DNA.

My Family
One wife, two daughters, two dogs, three cats, two rabbits and a partridge in a pear tree.

Now tell us about yourself. Who the heck are? Why are you here? What experience do you bring? What would you like to get out of this summer class?

Well what can I say about myself... My name is Matt and I'm fabulous. Ok no seriously... I grew up in rural North Carolina and as many of you know I talk about it a lot but I think it is important for us to talk about ourselves and to share our experiences so that we can constantly learn from one another. I am finishing up my Masters in general education this summer and will start my PhD in American Studies this fall. I hope to one day be a professor (and write a few books, naturally). I love life and I try to always have a smile on my face. So I hope that was an ok introduction about who I am, if you have any questions comments or concerns (well I hope you don't have concerns) please don't hesitate to say hello, I'm super nice :o) Enjoy your weekend!

Hmmm... My name is Alex and I was not intending to enter the field of education. I have an undergraduate degree in public relations from SUNY Fredonia and was an Emergency Medical Technician up until I served on the Disaster Response Unit at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Shortly after this experience, I was desperately looking for a career that I could live with. After a few unsuccessful tries, I truly asked myself what I would love to do. Two things popped into my mind. Play music in a rock band or teach kids. I decided to make one of those a hobby and went back to school to get a degree in education. I came to UB and received an advanced certificate to teach English and just spent my first year as a teacher in Attica. I'm not sure if I was supposed to give my entire life's story, but it seems I did. Sorry if this takes up too much space.

As it shows above, my name is Jen. I grew up in Batavia and I just moved out on my own last August. I've realized the only person I can live with is my kitten Rooney. :) Anyway, I'm finishing up my Masters in Secondary English Ed and am thinking about heading down south to teach and perhaps to earn my PhD in Women's Studies at Emory in Atlanta. I had a long term sub job last year in Kendall and I miss teaching, but I haven't found my place yet.
As for my interests, I play a few instruments (guitar, piano, and mandolin) and I write music with my friend Adam. I've played in a few weddings and I also played at a coffeehouse in a benefit concert for the American Cancer Society. I'm a bit of a music snob at times but I think that's my right. :)

So...I am Erika and I am a UB undergrad alumni who couldn't get enough, so I am continuing with my Masters in English Education (5-12) and am excited and nervous about teaching. I am originally from Webster, a suburb of Rochester, and always saw myself moving back. I am a total homebody. As the years progress I get a little more used to being away (and thats ridiculous, like an hour away from home is that bad!?) I like to run and LOVE music, all kinds, and am a fabulous steering-wheel singer. I am terrible when it comes to technology, but want to keep learning! Hopefully this class and you all can help with that endeavor!

It is probably suffice to say that having a profound love for the outdoors and a plethora of hair on my head is not enough to introduce myself. I am from a fairly suburban home in Farmington, NY, due north of Canandaigua (and Canandaigua Lake). I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters whom are all very competitive with one another. Some of you who know me already, have heard tale of the absurd family experiences in my life, and the rest of you will have by the end of this class. I have just one year left before I have completed both my Master's degree and NYS Cert, here, and I am anxious to actually bring my experiences into the classroom. I could probably say much more, but I am also anxious to get some shut-eye, so I'll sum it up with the following: I love to climb mountains and backpack and mountain bike (which you will probably witness in class tomorrow) and I cherish the simple things in life. I am not very musical, because I do not have enough time to bring much effort into this field, but I am practicing harmonica in order to compete with my very musically adept family members. Hope you all have a good night and I will see you in class tomorrow evening. Peace.

Hi I'm Diane. My advisor suggested I take this course as it will take me out of my comfort zone. Believe me it has, so be patient.
A little about me. I have lived in Buffalo all my life and so has my husband of 18 years. I returned to college after raising my two daughters. I couldn't have done this without their support. I think it has been a positive experience for my girls as we study together and do homework together. I will be "wrapping it up" in December with a Masters degree as a Literacy Specialist.

My name is Alicia. I live and grew up in the Buffalo area. I have 2 younger sisters and 3 little brothers. I bought my first house about a year and a half ago, am getting married in 37 days and traveling to Alaska shortly after :) I completed my undergrad work at Niagara University in Childhood and Early Childhood Education. I am wrapping up my Masters program here at UB in Early Childhood Education. I have taught kindergarten for the past 3 years in Orchard Park and am moving on to 4th grade next year, which is exciting and nerve-wrecking at the same time. I have 3 kittens, Stella, Giselle and Diezel. I love to scrapbook, read, teach, ride atv's and on the motorcycle and I can't wait to be a mommy someday really soon :)
There is probably much more to me, but this is a good start:)

Hello all, I'm Sarah. I've been a 10th grade English teacher at Cleveland Hill for the past few years, and before that I taught 1 year in a small, rural district in Orleans county (Holley). I live in the small, Mayberry-ish village of Akron with my husband Justin, our cats Finnegan and Oliver, and our first child on the way in January. I enjoy the simple things--good food, good friends, my family, my pets. During the summer I bounce back and forth between WNY and my parent's cottage in Canada, near Owen Sound and Sauble Beach, to get a little R & R where I attempt to get through all the books I want to read during the school year but never have the time for.
